HTC patents 3 new ways of screen unlocking. First one is similar to the way that was used previously in the first version of TouchFlo on the original HTC Touch. The essence of the method is unblocking the screen with vertically holding your finger on the outer edge of the display. This might seem rather attractive for the users.

The second way is to provide a way of changing the locked screen saver without having to exit the lock. This method has been previously used neither by HTC, nor by any of its competitors and it’s rather compatible for now.

But the third way to unlock the screen is used quite often on devices of almost all the leading manufacturers, especially on smartphones with touch screen. It is so typical that the fact that previously no one has ever patented it can cause a genuine surprise.

This novelty is not cheap, but expensive, stylish and elegant. With its size and weight HTC P3470 does not stand out among its brethren – 108×58.3 x15.7mm and 122grams.

HTC P3470 perfectly lies in palm. The device doesn’t sneak thanks to the soft-touch material, from which the front panel with buttons located on it and its back cover of the battery compartment are made.

Unlike the devices of Touch series the screen of HTC P3470 is slightly recessed inside the shell, so that it’s a little bit difficult to control it with finger.

Fillings and productivity

The heart of P3470 is the common TI OMAP 850 platform, equipped with a processor with frequency of 201 MHz. Of course, this is far from ideal performance, but do not forget that innovation is precisely aimed for those users who are willing to sacrifice this option for the availability of GPS-receiver on board, and low cost. On the other hand, even such a simple (by modern standards) processor it is quite enough for comfortable work with numerous office applications.

In addition, the platform is equipped with a decent amount of memory: 256 MB ROM and 128 MB of RAM. The part of the memory is used by the operating system, while another part goes to the preinstalled software; the user can use only 120.74 Mb and 75.25 Mb.

The productivity of the communicator has traditionally been tested with the help of the package Spb Benchmark 1.6. In the table for comparison are the results obtained earlier for the more expensive and productive HTC TyTN II (Qualcomm MSM7200 400 MHz, 128 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM, Windows Mobile 6.0), review of which can be found here.

Characteristics HTC P3470 HTC TyTN II
Spb Benchmark index 265 425
CPU index 1009 1576
File system index 109 178
Graphics index 1974 3500

The results are not high, although they are expected.

Display
HTC still maintains the old TFT-matrix screen with diagonal 2.8″ and QVGA-resolution and 320×240 pixels. When using the interface TouchFLO, which allows you to manage your finger, the installation of the screen is quite justified. However, our present hero is a budget unit that fully justifies the low resolution of the display.

Communication opportunities

HTC P3470 supports the full range of GSM networks, data transmission via GPRS can be implemented with the support of EDGE, so that you will have the “fast Internet” everywhere, wherever possible. But the communicator does not have a Wi-Fi module. But without Bluetooth 2.0, another wireless communication module, now it is difficult to find even a budget mobile phone. P3470 is not an exception.

GPS-navigation

Built-in GPS-receiver is based on a standard SiRFstarIII chip. Cold start of the device takes less than 3-4 minutes. If you want to reduce the search time, you can use the supplied QuickGPS utility and download data about satellites from the Internet. But “hot” start takes only one and a half minutes.

Software

HTC P3470 runs Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro, but the design of the system is changed due to a set of HTC Home utilities. Thus, the desktop has become silver with a big digital clock and five tabs, which provide quick access to certain applications and settings. In addition, it is possible to customize the sound profiles and find out the weather forecast (in case the phone is connected to the internet).

The changes have also affected the standard methods of text input – there are various intellectual modes (including the Cyrillic alphabet).

In addition the Communicator has a number of other small softens, such as an archive of ZIP files, a program for reading PDF-files, Adobe Reader, download the application for Java-programs, the application for reading RSS Hub news feeds, etc.

Conclusion

HTC P3470 can be described as relatively successful continuation of the popular model P3300 from the same manufacturer. The recommended price of the communicator is not very high and attracts a big audience. Of course, a weak processor, the lack of Wi-Fi and not very good display slightly spoil the overall picture, but a stylish and elegant design, decent equipment, sound ergonomics, a rich set of software, as well as the availability of on-board GPS-receiver are the main and make clear that HTC P3470 can be one of the leaders in the segment of affordable modern communicators.
