We respect the HTC Hero because it was one of the first Android-powered smartphones launched in the US. Going back, we see the Hero was the modified version of the T-Mobile G1 and we can say it’s these handsets that started out the era of Androidmania. All in all, we can talk about the HTC Hero for hours mentioning its advantages and lacks, but at this moment we have another reason to recall it — looks like Walmart tried to check out our memory by introducing the HTC Hero instead of the HTC Evo Design 4G.

We can’t say what the main reason of such confusion was, but the same thing’s happening in Sam Club’s documentations. I mean the HTC Evo Design 4G is called the HTC Hero. This is strange, because both smartphones have nothing in common. It’s noticed even at a glance — the HTC Evo Design 4G is a standard HTC device in terms of design, while the HTC Hero clearly shows the imperfection of the then handsets.

However, we all understand someone has made a mistake. The phone offered for $98.88 is the HTC Evo Design 4G, and not the HTC Hero.

Source

Google develops Android versions very quickly thanks to the engineers working in the company. But when it comes to pushing them out to the smartphones, we see the company has real problems. And it turns out that the product is ready to use, but it is unavailable for the users.

Some time ago Google decided to surprise its users by rolling out Android 2.2 update for many smartphones, but it wasn’t the end, and the manufacturer announced the most recent smartphone-centric build of Android — Gingerbread 2.3. The problem of pushing out the corresponding update as soon as possible makes the customers think whether it is worth to buy an Android-based smartphone hoping it will be updated soon.

Well, the latest smartphone to get the Gingerbread update will be the T-Mobile G2. It’s interesting this handset is a worthy successor of the T-Mobile G1, which was the first device based on Android that hit the market. After some time its older brother is going to be one of the first smartphones to be updated to Android 2.3. But this doesn’t mean it will be rolled around in coming days, as a HTC representative said the T-Mobile G2 will have the Android 2.3 update in summer.

We don’t know whether it’s true or not, but there is a long time until the mentioned date anyway, so the only thing we can do now is to sit and wait for T-Moblie’s or HTC’s announcements.

T-Mobile G1 (also known as HTC Dream) and MyTouch 3G (known as HTC Magic) were the gadgets that were being supported by CyanogenMod. And now when their popularity has fallen down, the things are getting worse for the gadgets, leading to the dismissal of those from the list.

Earlier we were expecting the first developers’ gadget- T-Mobile G1 to stick up with the CyanogenMod even after the fact that T-Mobile itself announced about the goodbye to the device. The smartphone was so great, that multiple companies even tried to clone it, while there was no more G1.

I bet that if this was the case with XDA developers, then the gadget would not die- these enthusiasts would be more excited for making the gadget more updated- porting this and that kind of operating systems and features. But anyways it’ s over by now. And those users who do still have this awesome device will just look at it and remember the first Android creation.

If speaking clearly we should mention that the device information will still be available from the official website of CyanogenMod, but still we do have the note that “This devices is no longer supported after CyanogenMod 6.x”.

CyanogenMod is based on Android Open Source Project, which in it’s turn leads to the idea that CyanogenMod is an open source itself. Thus quite a large number of the enthusiasts included in the project might try to put some effort for the creation of new updates. These will be unofficial ones though.

Even the fact that we do have the chance of enjoying the existence of the G2, does not make some of the users to get rid of the gadget. It feels like this device not much left to desire if talking about the software. The thing is that it is not enough powerful to offer software updates. At least this is what was announced by HTC and Google. But this did not stop the developers to have a chance of working over it.

XDA-developers got a chance to port myTouch 3G Froyo ROM over this cute gadget. And it’s interesting that everything works out simply great. And it’s just a chance to enjoy all of the great moments of your gadget. At least the last breathe of it.

GPS application NDrive, which was only available for the iPhone, is now available for the users of Android phones!

What is the difference between Google Maps and NDrive? And why pay for NDrive, when Google Maps Navigation is available for free?

First, to work with Google Maps Navigation, you need a good communication channel with high speed. Secondly, the application is developed for the United States and the users of other countries don’t have access to it (do not take into account the attempts of hackers to unblock applications throughout the world). NDrive uses the card, installed on your phone, and does not require a 3G connection, which can be expensive for many users, so here you go.

NDrive provides step by step voice instructions and navigation, creating a route, three different modes routing, favorite, POI database and radars. Other features of the application include the creation of extended routes with multiple points of destination for trip planning, 3D mapping of some buildings and sites, support for the ABC and QWERTY keyboard, and automatic switching for day / night.

NDrive will work on versions of Android 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0, including the following phones: Motorola Droid, T-Mobile G1, HTC Magic, Hero, Dream and Samsung i7500.

2009 was a good year for Android. Of course, it is yet too early to talk about any huge impact of search giant Google on the mobile phone market, as the number of Android phones isn’t too many, and each of the mobile manufacturers has released many other smartphones during this year. But trend shows growth. More and more manufacturers launch or plan to develop Android devices, so the list for 2010 will not be limited to 5 smartphones only.

In this article we will not discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Android platform, or compare it with other platforms. We made a list of the most interesting devices of the year, which includes phones from HTC, Samsung and Motorola, and of course HTC has a leading role here.

1. T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream)
The first phone based on Google Android platform launched back in 2009. By modern standards, its specs appear to be unconvincing. Nevertheless, there are features that will interest a user. These features include a quality 3.2 inch display, full set of communications and wireless interfaces, GPS, a measure of frolicsome hardware platform (based on the processor Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz) and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Of course, the phone is also equipped with Google Apps and QWERTY keyboard.

All this may seem outdated оn the background of the current top models. But the most important thing is the fact that the HTC Dream (HTC Omni) and its operator version of the T-Mobile G1 were the first real and properly working devices on the new platform. It should be noted that T-Mobile G1 is tuned for use in networks of this operator, but the manufacturer has also released a special version — Android Dev Phone: 1.

2. HTC Hero
The HTC Hero can be called a representative of an entirely new generation of devices based on Android 2.

The most interesting feature of the phone is the HTC Sense UI. The experience gained while working with Windows Mobile smartphones has been successfully transferred to a new software environment. The Sense allows you to personalize the device to best suit your needs: This incudes the creation of profiles and a variety of widgets. The HTC Hero will surprise users with a 5 megapixel camera, 3.2 inch screen, all communication and interfaces, ubiquitous GPS, 3,5 mm audio jack. The phone is equipped with not the most productive platform for these days from Qualcomm, along with a small amount of memory, and has lower screen resolution.

3. Samsung i7500 Galaxy
Samsung is also one of those top companies in the mobile market that was eager to test Android. They have already began selling their first Google phone — the Samsung i7500 Galaxy, which turned out to be pretty successful.

Samsung has intorduced a stylish and a gorgeous touchphone with AMOLED display (the screen resolution is 320×480 pixels) and 8 GB of memory on board. Other specs are the same as the ones of HTC Hero — the same hardware platform, a set of communications, 5 megapixel camera and so on. The design of the i7500 is typical for Samsung. Some users will appreciate the standard navigation keys — which are absent in the most products of HTC. But the standard interface of Google Android is disappointing: the Sense of HTC Hero is still beautiful. Actually, these two devices — the Samsung i7500 and the HTC Hero — will compete for the title of best Google phone of the year, and it is difficult to say which one will win.

4. HTC Tattoo
Along with such top models as the HTC Hero and the Samsung i7500, the Android market had room for budget models, such as the HTC Tattoo.
The device is notable not for its outstanding performance, as the parameters of the smartphone are more than average. It has a small 2.8 inch screen with a low resolution of 240×320 pixels and a rather weak 3.2 megapixel camera. However, there was a place for GPS, Wi-Fi, even for the HTC Sense UI, which has raised the interest of users. Another significant feature of the device is the ability to personalize the look of the smartphone through color replacement panels — “tattoos.”

It would be wrong to assume that only HTC drew attention to the segment of low-cost mass models. Samsung appeared here as well, presenting its vision of the budget Google phone — the Samsung i5700.

5. Motorola DEXT
Other manufacturers also surprised their fans. For example, Motorola is slowly coming back after a protracted crisis. Inexpensive QWERTY device based on Google Android platform, the Motorola DEXT, along with other products is designed to improve the situation.

In terms of hardware capabilities, the phone has nothing extraordinary — a QWERTY keyboard (the device is made in the side-slider form factor), 3 inch screen, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, GPS, Wi-Fi, support for all-band GSM, 3, 5 mm audio jack.

An interesting feature of this unit is the add-on interface called MOTOBLUR. The UI designed for users that can enjoy whole list of social networks. It is a launcher, changing the standard interface of Android, with a greater ability to synchronize user data between the various services such as Facebook, Gmail and others.

Good news! Now you can make your HTC Dream even more original and unique.

MusicSkins — a well-known manufacturer of accessories for mobile devices launched a unique tool that gives you the opportunity to easily create a unique skin for your phone. The “Customizer tool” works only on the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) for now, but other HTC devices are expected to start working with it, too.

How does it work?

It’s easy! Choose a model for uploading images and photos, select background (any color and any shade), place text and other elements. That’s all!

Moreover, on the official site of MusicSkins you can find a large number of original skins. They are all divided into categories, so you can easily find what you need.
