Some months ago the FT wrote that Anssi Vanjoki, outgoing head of Nokia’s smartphone division, said using Android OS was like ‘peeing in your pants’ for warmth in winter. It may help temporarily, but the consequences…

Anyway, I’m not sure about warming up, but Android really helps to beat the competition. And I guess it was Android that helped HTC to leave Nokia behind in terms of market capitalization.

According to latest research, the capitalization of the Taiwanese manufacturer made up $33.88 billion, while Nokia’s capitalization was only $32.84 billion. Besides, HTC’s stock price has grown by 33 percent, while the price of Nokia’s stock has dropped by 19 percent.

This is an important achievement for the Taiwanese company, especially because HTC is a rather “young” company, founded in 1997, and lately it managed to show a great progress — the market capitalization of HTC in the past 5 years has grown by 30 times.

When HTC was founded, it used to produce phones on contract for brand-name suppliers. Then the company started to manufacture products under its own brand, but those were mainly Windows Mobile devices that were successfully sold in a short period of time only. But then the company moved to Android, and it made the brand’s popularity grow, helping HTC enter the list of the top smartphone manufacturers in the world. At first HTC managed to beat such companies as Motorola and Sony Ericsson. And now Nokia and RIM are left behind.

Robert Chen, the analyst of the Goldman Sachs Bank, says HTC will probably produce 200 million smartphones and 30 million tablets annually in the following three-five years. “This reflects its superior position, which always [HTC] to benefit from the broadband convergence trend, significant growth potential in emerging markets, as well as its leading product road map and branding campaign that continue to increase its preference among global consumers,” Chen said.

Earlier there was a rumor that Motorola Droid X would receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread, then the rumor was denied and replaced by HTC Thunderbolt. This time we do have a chance to add another HTC gadget to the list of nominees. There’s a word that HTC Droid Incredible will also get the Gingerbread update sometime soon. The info is somewhat confirmed by an email from HTC rep. It states that “Incredible is going to get 2.3 Gingerbread and we expect to be ready to release it with Verizon before the end of the second quarter of this year.”

The fact that HTC decided to release an update for Droid Incredible is pretty weird. The gadget is already quite old and not that enhanced with features. Anyway, for its time the gadget was one of the best smartphones coming with advanced features. The enthusiasts have already got the chance to get the update on the device.

For now we have to wait until the official announcement about the update takes place. I guess there’s a chance to get a device that will come up with a lower price but with the best operating system version so far.

HTC Droid Incredible has a 1GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera with the feature of video recording, 3.7 inch display with a resolution of 800×480 and an S-LCD screen. As for the connectivity, it has Bluetooth version 2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR), Wi-Fi and an opportunity to work with 3G networks. The main carrier of the gadget is Verizon.

What is HTC Pyramid? Earlier we were assuming it to be tablet, but the rumor was dismissed. And as it seems like XDA-developers’ source was not fully sharing our feelings. So we do know now that this is a device with 4.3 inch gadget with a resolution of 540 x 960 qHD display(this means that the device will be the first SLCD device with a higher resolution than WVGA), 1.2 GHz processor. The device will mostly likely be based on Android 3.0, which is quite strange as earlier we were reported that this version of the Android OS will be supported only by tablets. Well, the version is fitted for the tablets but this might actually that the device-support is not excluded though.

As for the rest of the specs we do have a 768 MB of RAM, which is not that great, buy anyways. The camera option comes in with two pieces- 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a super 8 megapixel camera on the back part. And the last interesting feature that device might sport is the dual-core processor. Well, this was a great idea for the tablet, while for the smartphone it might be a bit overloading- as HTC has already announced about its plans in this field.

The connectivity of HTC Pyramid includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios.

The gadget is rumored to come in Q2 with the intervention of T-Mobile, so I bet that we might wait for a little bit. XDA developers have always been quite accurate with the pics of the gadgets, while the specs rumored sometimes do not match the real ones.

HTC WP7 smartphones sales surpass all the expectations as a consequence, the demand for Smartphones is much higher than the supply. European mobile operators are faced with a shortage of Smartphones running Windows Phone 7 operating system.

The leading mobile operator Orange simply can not cope with the surging flow of pre-orders, it failed to deliver pre-ordered handsets HTC Mozart and Samsung Omnia 7 to its customers. Those customers who have pre-ordered and have not received their phones on time, will get a compensation in form of £20 HMV vouchers.

I hope the situation will soon be stabilized!

HTC CEO Peter Chou believes that the global financial crisis will not affect the sales of smartphones in Europe. For now the company shows steady growth, and by the end of the year it plans to enter the list of four major smartphone manufacturers.

Mr. Chou noted that the company that had created a number of high-performance smartphones, including the HTC EVO 4G, will continue to stay in the center of everybody’s interest.

It’s also noteworthy that though many analysts thought the sales of the HTC devices were doomed to failure, it didn’t happen, since the marketers of HTC made the emphasis on financially well-off countries, including Germany, France and the UK, and payed less attention to the countries that were more affected by the crisis (Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy and many others).
