Original HTC Desire Will Not Be Updated to Gingerbread

I guess many of the original HTC Desire owners are waiting for the Gingerbread update impatiently. Our today’s news will disappoint you – most likely Android 2.3 will not be coming to your handsets…

Last year HTC promised to update the entire Desire family to Gingerbread, but the original HTC Desire has some memory limitations (Android 2.3 plus HTC Sense seems to be too much for the smartphone’s 512 MB ROM chip), because of which the update is almost impossible.

Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.

The apologies don’t change much, of course, but at least HTC is giving us the real reasons and explain why the update is impossible. I guess many other manufacturers should follow their example…

So, the official Gingerbread will not be coming to the original HTC Desire… But don’t get disappointed! XDA Developers are enhancing the capabilities of the smartphone, so I guess very soon they’ll bring a non-official Gingerbread to all of us.
