Open source operating systems have many advantages, but there are serious disadvantages, too. One of the main disadvantages is the fact that open source platforms are potentially vulnerable to malicious applications and software.
The Kaspersky Lab has calculated more than 70 types of malicious applications for Google Android, and the experts of the company say that the number of those applications continues to grow rapidly.

Nikolay Grebennikov, Chief Technology Officer of Kaspersky Lab, says that the number of malicious software for Google Android is growing faster than it was with personal computers when they were on the same stage of development.
Jay Abbott from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP also added that every time a new technology becomes popular, “bad guys” start “paying attention” to it and create different viruses and malware. So the fact that much malware is being created for Android means only that the platform is really successful.
Of course, Google is doing all to prevent the spread of the viruses. Not so long ago, for example, 21 malicious applications were removed from the Android Market. At the same time Google remotely removed the dangerous apps from the smartphones of those who managed to download them before they were removed from the store.
“We’re committed to building new safeguards to help prevent these kinds of attacks from happening in the future,” said Android’s security chief Rich Cannings.
Google Android security is becoming more and more important now, especially after the report by Gartner that predicted that this year about 38.5 percent of smartphones will run Android. We hope that Google will really do everything to fix the security issues and prevent malicious apps from being distributed via Android Market.
On the other hand, the users should also be careful with what they download. If you see an application with a strange name, created by who-knows-who, maybe it will be better not to download it so not to face malware problems in future?
