We have discussed the reasons why HTC failed in the fourth quarter of 2011, and there is no need to resume those discussions. At the beginning of this year the company announced it would change its strategy and would produce only a few smartphones. Said but not done, as the last tech event showed HTC will fill the market with a bunch of new smartphones again. Notably, HTC seems to be confident about its success.
Head of HTC Europe Florian Seiche said:
“We are confident this year will be … a much better year. Even with the Q1 not being the ideal fast start right out of the gate in January, which of course we would have preferred, even with that we are very confident.”

I personally wonder why HTC is so sure of its success, because the financial results of Q4 are not that good and even the first quarter of this year shows Samsung, Apple and Nokia are getting more powerful. Besides, how will the company survive sticking to its same policy?
Anyway, the coming months will show if HTC can overcome the financial problems and whether the creation of new smartphone lines can save it. In short, all this bears a likeness to Baron Munchausen who saved himself from drowning in quicksand by pulling himself up using only his bootstraps.
