HTC devices were always difficult to change and alter, since they came with locked bootloaders. Everything changed after the well-known scandal with an Australian guy — the manufacturer promised to start offering devices with unlocked bootloaders. The customers didn’t have to wait for too long, the official statement is already made.
“There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.
The statement was made not on the website of HTC, but instead on HTC’s Facebook page. Earlier this week Peter Chou already spoke about his plans to overview the policy with the bootloaders.
The missing part of the information is that it’s not known whether the smartphones that are still on the way to the stores will get unlocked bootloaders. Actually, the same question might also be asked about the models that are not yet released, but were announced to come with locked bootloaders.
